And Now...We Wait

Yesterday evening just before dinner, I was sitting at my computer checking email and reading the news. A new email message popped up from our adoption agency. The subject said, very clearly, "Your dossier went to Ethiopia today!" I saw the words "dossier" and "Ethiopia," but it took several seconds for me to decipher the meaning of the email. We thought for sure it wouldn't get there for another month. I was shocked. And then I exploded. I screamed, jumped out of my chair, ran back and forth from the living room to the kitchen a few times, and shouted to Xander, "OUR DOSSIER WENT TO ETHIOPIA TODAY!!!" And there was no response. Silence. I ran into the hallway and saw that Xander was in the bathroom. "OUR DOSSIER WENT TO ETHIOPIA TODAY!!!!" Still silence. "OUR DOSSIER WENT TO ETHIOPIA AND YOU'RE IN THE BATHROOM?! ARGH!" At which point, the door flew open and Xander came running out clearly prepared to do battle.

"What? What's wrong?!" He looked frenzied.

"Our dossier went to Ethiopia!"

Silence.

"Our dossier went to Ethiopia!" I jumped up and down and ran into the living room and did a little dance and ran back into the kitchen and did a little dance and still Xander just stood there, so I went and hugged him. He pushed me away.

"I'm sorry. I just need a minute."

"Huh?" I couldn't believe it. We had waited all this time and he needed a minute? We could become parents any day now, and he needed a minute?! What the hell?!

"I'm sorry. I thought you were screaming because someone had broken into the apartment or because you were hurt, and I was in there getting ready to have to come out and do something and..."

"Ohhh...um, sorry. No intruder. Just babies." We stood there looking at each other for several quiet seconds before I resumed jumping up and down and exclaiming, "Our dossier went to Ethiopia!"

And then we hugged. And then I burst into tears. And then I sat on the sofa in stunned silence for a couple of hours while Xander called everyone and told them.

Awesome! Congratulations! That is fantastic!

Xander. Dude. Seriously. Reaction time, here, buddy. This was a test of the emergency broadcast system. Time to train.

Test: "When baby Exorcist-barfs all over Alana, what do you do?"

Test: "Baby has exploding diaper, and there is a silhouette of your wife in poo on your wall. What do you do?"

Test: "Baby just did something gifted, like hit her mouth with the sweet potatoes instead of her hair. What do you do?"

Okay. Go celebrate. Then review these emergency broadcast system scenarios, in the event that soon, it will not be a test.

:D

For the record: I don't think that post represented my follow-up reaction very accurately.

Everything Alana wrote occurred as stated. But I was seriously freaked out that someone was in our house or that Alana had just cut off one of her fingers. The tone of her voice (as heard through the bathroom door) was identical to the time she caught her finger in a folding table and screamed for me to help her. It's impossible for me to go from "hulk out and protect the family" to "excited about babies" in less than 10 seconds. So I politely said, "I'm sorry; I need a minute."

All of that said, I'm ecstatic that we're so close to getting some babies. I've been telling EVERYONE. And you had better believe I'll protect my babies from danger too, even if they're just excited and trying to tell me they found some money in the couch or learned to play the cello or something.

I love this post! You guys are hilarious! And I'm SO excited for you! I can't even begin to imagine what this must be like for you. Just know that we think of you often and can't wait to meet the Fabertids.

I can't say that I can blame Xander. Actually, I can sympathize. When Kelley burst forth into the room and announced that we were expecting our first, I was sound asleep in the bed. That was 5 years ago and I still haven't completley woken up yet.

Congradulamacations and stuff. Good to hear that the process is proceeding. Also, good to hear Alex is in father mode. We just work differently is all.

And if one of your kids learns to play cello in unexpected time, then he or she might be a cyborg, or you're living in the Matrix.
