The Basics

If this is your first time here, welcome! We call this our "Public House" because it is basically a reflection of what is happening or being talked about in our house each week. This blog started as a way to share photos and stories with our friends and family members who live far away from us. And for the most part, that's why we keep it up. You'll find stories about our cats, pictures of our gardening attempts, photos from our travels, and other completely mundane things here. Occasionally, I (Alana) write about more important issues as well. Adoption, food, politics, the environment. Pretty much whatever Xander and I are talking about at the time. We welcome your thoughts and questions, so feel free to drop us a line in the comments section anytime. Here are a few posts that will give you some insight into our lives:

Hello, Stranger

A Love Letter to Pizza

Am I a Hipster?

A Tale of Two Cousins

Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression...

A Tale of Two Spitters

Immigrant Haikus

Bits About Our Life in Quebec

Walk 1.5 Miles in My Shoes

If you're an adoptive parent or looking to become one, there's a tag on the right called "Adoption and Kids" that will take you to all of our posts related to adoption. On the right side of the page we also have lots of links to sites pertaining to adoption, race, and other related issues. Our best advice to people interested in adoption is to read, read, read. Read about domestic and international adoption. Read about race. Read stories and essays written by adult adoptees. Listen to what the critics say. Read it all. And then use that information to develop your own beliefs about adoption, because that will be the foundation for everything.
